VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd is a state owned and controlled non-profit limited liability company established by law and operating under the ownership steering of the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy. VTT provides expert services for both private and public sectors and is ranked among the leading European RTOs. The VTT’s Microelectronics research unit participating the MISEL project is specialized in contract research, process development, ASIC design and small scale manufacturing services for European and global industries in nano-, micro-, and printed electronics.

VTT’s main tasks are linked to development of the higher-level information processing (cortical type) computing core, development and post-CMOS integration of the FeRAM for compact implementation of the different processors, and preparation of the CMOS imager matrix for QD photodetector integration. VTT is coordinating the MISEL project.

The research foundry AMO GmbH is a non-profit SME specializing in R&D for micro- and optoelectronic applications. AMO acts as a pathfinder for innovative technologies for nanoelectronics and nanophotonics applications for the German and European industry. The mission is to demonstrate innovative technologies and to introduce new materials, including their implementation in novel device architectures, prototyping and small volume fabrication. The current focus of AMO lies on electronic and opto-electronic devices based on two dimensional materials, especially on graphene and TMDC based novel devices and architectures at a prototype level.

AMO will be responsible for physical realization of the pixels with built-in synaptic weight, as well as the general process optimization for these pixels. AMO is involved in WP1.

The academic culture is marked by diversity, experience and innovation. A distinctive feature of Wuppertal University is research in interdisciplinary, cross-faculty centres.

The research planned in this project will be conducted at the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Information- and Mediatechnology. The faculty has a strong track record on new materials, polymer- and flexible electronics, opto-electronics and high frequency electronics.

BUW will be responsible for the electro-optical characterization of the photodetectors and will develop together with AMO pixels with built-in synaptic weight.

Kovilta (founded in 2011) is an SME developing smart image sensing and processing solutions, spanning from sensor front-end and in-sensor computing hardware to full embedded computing implementations. Kovilta’s team of professionals, including 6 PhDs, has a broad expertise ranging from mixed-mode ASIC design to software development and applied mathematics. Our mission is to bring the effortless perception capabilities of biology to portable self-navigating devices such as UAVs, robots and vehicles, by advancing custom sensors/neuromorphic hardware and in-memory computation.

In MISEL Kovilta leads WP2 (sensor-level computing, techniques for situation awareness/instant reaction). Kovilta also has a key role in WP3 (prediction and scene understanding). Kovilta acts as the main technology integrator in MISEL and has a significant role in WP1 (emerging memory and quantum dot photon sensors postprocessed on CMOS), as well as WP4 (system integration, benchmarking).

CiTIUS – the Singular Research Centre in Intelligent Technologies is a research centre of excellence which is part of the Singular Research Centres Network of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC).

CiTIUS hosts more than 110 researchers, including 31 senior researchers who have been appointed by an external Scientific Advisory Board. CiTIUS research activity is structured in 8 scientific programmes: (1) Machine Learning, (2) Advanced Computing, (3) Semiconductor Devices and Autonomous Sensors, (4) e-Health, (5) Approximate Processing, (6) Personal robots, (7) Natural Language Technologies, (8) Artificial Vision.

CiTIUS role in the project includes the cooperation with other partners to design the architecture of the MISEL system that brings AI to the edge, as well as custom CMOS circuits for event generation, hyperdimensional computing and spatio-temporal deep neural networks with in-memory computing.



Fraunhofer CAN

Fraunhofer CAN, Hamburg, Germany

Fraunhofer CAN is a research division of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP and has a worldwide unique competence in the synthesis of colloidal nanoparticles via continuous flow reactions. Here, in contrast to conventional nanoparticle batch syntheses, the use of custom-designed reactors enables the reproducible fabrication of quantum dots (QDs) with precisely adjustable properties, such as absorption and emission characteristics.

The capabilities and expertise of Fraunhofer CAN enable the fabrication of tailor-made nanoparticles and their extensive characterization using advanced spectroscopic techniques and electron microscopy. Within the framework of different research projects, precisely engineered quantum dots were synthesized and incorporated into different types of devices, such as qLEDs employing QDs as active emitter material or prototypical NIR photodetectors.

Within the MISEL consortium, CAN will be responsible for the fabrication of NIR semiconductor quantum dots that will be supplied to the project partners for the fabrication of QD based photodetectors.

Lodz University of Technology, Lodz, Poland

Institute of Applied Computer Science – a unit that will participate in the project, is a division of Lodz University of Technology (TUL), one of the largest technical universities in Poland. The Institute has two statutory objectives: research and teaching. Our research directions that ate relevant to the proposal include Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. We are involved both in theoretical and practical aspects of the domain, with emphasis on development of algorithms that combine rule-based and learning-based approaches, as well as on development of explainable AI methods. The Institute has an infrastructure, administrative resources and workforce that is adequate for fulfilling the perceived involvement in the project, which is development of intelligent data analysis algorithms.

TUL is responsible for development of architecture and information analysis algorithms for the cortical processor.

Laboratoire national de métrologie et d’Essais, Paris, France

LNE is a French state-owned laboratory charged with pre-market testing and certification of products and coordinating the French metrology. Since 2008, the LNE has been entrusted by multiple national public agencies and industries with the organization of campaigns for the evaluation of ICT systems (natural language processing, image and video processing, robotics, autonomous vehicle). With more than 850 ICT evaluations to its name, the laboratory specializes in the design of experimental plans and evaluation metrics, and in the specification and qualification of reference data. Through its involvement in standardization committees, the LNE will also contribute to the dissemination of the project results at an international level.

LNE is responsible for the evaluation and the benchmarking of the solution.

Lund University is the largest institution of research and higher education in Scandinavia. It is a research intensive university with over 3500 active researchers. The University has a significant experience from EU Research in FP7 researchers are involved in over 270 projects. ULUND is the major Swedish center for Nanoscience, primarily in materials and device technology. It further hosts the Industrial Excellence Center “System Design on Si” that is a 10-year project with strong industrial participation (Ericsson AB, Sony, Infineon, Cadence).

The main task will be low temperature processing of ferroelectric devices by ALD and their integration on the Si CMOS platform.
